Blue is the New Red By: Ali Schwyter

Welcome back Vanessa Piche fans and prepare yourself as we enter the month of love! Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or just trying to figure things out, you probably have a good idea of what Valentine's Day, and the week leading up to it, is all about. It’s full of teddy bears, heart shaped chocolate boxes, rushing to get the perfect gift, and most importantly, the color red. Universally, red symbolizes love and passion but what if we told you that we want to change that this year? Thats right, we’re saying goodbye to red and hello to blue. 

This year’s Pantone Color of the Year 2020 is PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue. How they described it is that the color instills calm, confidence, and connection, the enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era. We are all about blue and we couldn't be more satisfied with the color chosen.  

So why are we replacing blue with red this holiday? Simple, we want a new wave of creativity. Everything ranging from our handcrafted paintings to our chic nautical apparel has a  touch of blue. This color reminds us of the sky and sea and is said to be beneficial to both the mind and body. The color is calming and it shows in the artwork of our designs. We are even lucky enough to say that Annie Selke chose a Vanessa Piche painting to feature on her website. It is the perfect blue palette that Pantone picked for 2020! 

So after reading all of this, what can you take away from it? Think outside of the box this Valentine’s Day and experiment with the color blue. 2020 Fashion Resolution By: Ali Schwyter

Hello Vanessa Piche friends and family and Happy New Year! As 2020 is now upon us, many people like to sit back and reflect on the past and make resolutions for the future. January always feels like a clean sweep, a chance to start new and become a better version of yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically. We may be biased but the best way to start the new year right is treating ourselves to some new threads; A “revamped closet” as some would say. For those looking to make a change, there is way to turn this guilty pleasure into a resolution. SHOP LOCAL! 

Fashion is wonderful and a true art form but nowadays fast fashion, inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by retailers, is taking away from what the true meaning of design is. Vanessa Piche is a local Rhode Island artist who creates her hand printed clothing line and all designs are based on her oil paintings. Vanessa embodies what it means to show art through fashion while maintaining a small business. 

Pairing the perfect nautical outfit is simple this year with our beautiful collection of clothing and jewelry. Holiday Cream Puffs

Prep time: 30 minutes 

Cook time: 25 minutes 

Ingredients:

½ cup of butter (1 stick unsalted)

1 cup of water

1 teaspoon of salt 

1 cup of all-purpose flour 

4 eggs

1 cup of heavy cream 

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 

1 tablespoon confectioners sugar 

Whip Cream 

Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees





Pastry Directions:

In a large pot, bring water and butter to a rolling boil. Stir in flour and salt until the mixture forms a ball. Transfer the dough to a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon or a mixer, beat or mix in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Centers should be dry. 

When the puffs are cool split the puffs in half and remove any excess dough (if any) and fill the puff with the filling of your choice. (custard, chocolate pudding, or whipped cream. Whipped cream recipe below, ingredients listed above)



Whip cream directions: 

In a large bowl, whip cream when it is just about to form. Beat in vanilla and confectioners sugar until peaks form. Make sure you don’t over-beat, the cream will become lumpy and butter-like.

Italian Honey Balls 




Ingredients: 

 2 cups of flour, plus extra for dusting 

1 large lemon, zested (about 2 teaspoons)

½ large orange, zested (about 2 teaspoons)

3 tablespoons sugar

½ teaspoons fine sea salt

½ stick (2 ounces) unsalted butter, cut into ½ inch pieces, at room temperature

3 large eggs

1 tablespoon of white wine, such as pinot grigio 

1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract 

Canola oil for frying  

1 cup of honey 

½ cup of sugar 

1 tablespoon of lemon juice

1 ½ cups of hazelnuts, toasted 

Vegetable oil cooking spray 

Sugar sprinkles, for decoration

Powdered sugar, for dusting, optional 




Directions: 

  1. For the dough: In a bowl of a food processor, pulse together 2 cups of flour, lemon zest, orange zest, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Add the eggs, wine, and vanilla. Pulse until the mixture forms into a ball. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. 

  2. Cut the dough into 4 equal-sized pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each piece of dough until ¼ inch thick. Cut each piece of dough into ½ inch wide strips. Cut each strip of pastry into ½ inch pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a small ball about the size of a hazelnut. Lightly dredge the dough balls in flour, shaking off any excess. In a large heavy-bottomed saucepan, pour enough oil to fill the pan about a third of the way. Heat over medium heat until a deep-frying thermometer inserted in the oil reaches 375 degrees F. ( If you don’t have a thermometer, a cube of bread will brown in about 3 minutes). In batches, fry the dough until lightly golden, about 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. (The rested and quartered dough can also be rolled on a floured work surface into ½ inch thick logs and cut into equal-sized ½ inch pieces. The dough pieces can then be rolled into small balls and fried as above).

  3. In a large saucepan, combine the honey, sugar, and lemon juice over medium heat. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved, about 3 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat. Add the fried dough and hazelnuts and stir until coated in the honey mixture. Allow the mixture to cool in the pan for 2 minutes. 

  4. Spray the outside of a small, straight-sided water glass with vegetable oil cooking spray and place in the center of a round platter. Using a large spoon or damp hands, arrange the struffoli and hazelnuts around the glass to form a wreath shape. Drizzle any remaining honey mixture over the struffoli. Allow to set for 2 hours (can be made 1 day in advance). Decorate with sprinkles and dust with powdered sugar, if using. Remove the glass from the center of the platter and serve.

Holiday Cutout Cookies (Taste of Home recipe) 

Ingredients: 

1 cup butter, softened

1 cup shortening

3 cups sugar

4 large eggs, room temperature

6 tablespoons evaporated milk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 teaspoons almond extract

6 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

 

FROSTING:

3 cups confectioners' sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 to 6 tablespoons half-and-half cream

Food coloring of your choice, optional

Assorted sprinkles

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, cream butter, shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, milk and extracts. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking soda and salt; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Divide dough into four portions. Shape each into a disk; wrap in plastic. Refrigerate, covered, overnight or until firm enough to roll.

  2. Preheat oven to 400°. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut with floured 3-in. holiday cookie cutters. Place 1 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets.

  3. Bake until edges are lightly brown, 5-7 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool completely.

  4. In a large bowl, beat confectioners’ sugar, vanilla and enough cream to reach a spreading consistency. If desired, beat in food coloring. Frost and decorate cookies as desired.

Freeze option: Freeze undecorated cookies in freezer containers. To use, thaw in covered containers and decorate as desired.

Candy Cane Pie (Taste of Home recipe)

Ingredients

  • 24 large marshmallows

  • 1/2 cup whole milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

  • 6 drops peppermint extract

  • 6 drops red food coloring

  • 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon crushed peppermint candy, divided

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped

  • 1 chocolate crumb crust (8 inches)

Directions

  • In a heavy saucepan, combine marshmallows and milk over low heat. Cook and stir until marshmallows are melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat.

  • Stir in vanilla, salt, peppermint extract, and food coloring. Cool 30 minutes, stirring several times. Stir in 2 tablespoons crushed candies; fold in whipped cream.

  • Spoon into crust. Refrigerate, covered, 8 hours or overnight. Just before serving, sprinkle with remaining candy.

Our Newest Arrival! The Nautical Jewelry Line By: Siarra Chabot

Hello everyone and welcome back to our blog! November has been a busy time for the Vanessa Piche team and we’re thrilled to announce our newest addition, our first and newest Nautical Jewelry line. Each piece is handcrafted using family locally owned businesses in Rhode Island. These unique jewelry pieces have a mix between semi-precious stones, sterling silver, and silver-plated brass. Just like our clothing, every piece of jewelry is based on our award-winning paintings. The Nautical Jewelry line took us 9 months in the making, but we wanted to make sure each product exceeded our expectations. Our Vanessa Piche Fall Favorites By: Siarra Chabot

Hello everyone and happy October! My name is Siarra Chabot and I’m one of Vanessa Piche’s interns on her amazing team. This month we wanted to talk about some of our fall favorites in Vanessa’s collection. The days are getting shorter and the weather is starting to cool down. Fall is finally here, and we have so many great products for you all! My favorite part about fall is when the leaves start to change to bright orange, red, and yellows. The air is crisp and cool, and the summer heat has died down. I can finally dig out my fall oversized comfy sweaters and wear my favorite Vanessa Piche sweatshirt. The Compass Sweatshirt and long-sleeved shirts are a great piece to wear on one of those chilly days. It’s a great piece to put on if you’re just running some errands, relaxing at home, or meeting up with your BFF’s. It’s super soft and feels like loungewear, but is stylish giving you the best of both worlds. Another great look for the fall would be our Sailboat Pom Pom Hat. Once the end of October hits, I will definitely be needing this warm cozy hat to walk around campus to my classes. I love wearing pom pom hats as it starts to cool off and during those chilly fall days. They’re always fun and easy to match with any of my outfits. The last favorite I’ll be talking about is the Canvas Compass Tote bag. This bag is very versatile and a staple for fall essentials. It is so easy to toss my laptop into and off I go about my day. It’s big enough to hold all of my school supplies and everyday necessities. Whether you're on your way to class, traveling (would be a great carry-on in the airport), or running errands, the thick material allows anything and everything you need for your day packed into one bag. Meet my URI Intern Team

2018 was such an action packed year for the Vanessa Piche brand.  I successfully took my new apparel idea from one shirt to an entire line of clothing for men, women, and children.  With all of the growth in 2018, and looking forward to once again expanding in 2019, I knew I needed some help. There always seems like there are a million tasks to get a handle on, and I knew I had to recruit the best of the best.   I turned to the premier source for young, eager, and creative talent; The University of Rhode Island. URI is a hive of creative millennial worker bees who are the perfect addition to my team. The interns went through a rigorous interview process to make sure they were a perfect fit for the team.  They had to be self starters, eager to learn, and excited about being a part of this fast growing team. All of the final hires were passionate about getting real world experience from a local business. I see each and every new member of the team to be an asset to my brand and I am thrilled to have them for the spring 2019 semester.


And now without any further explanation I am excited today to introduce you to my creative and hardworking team.

My name is Amanda DeSantis. I am currently a Junior double majoring with Communications and Public Relations. I reside in Westchester, New York. This past summer I interned with KHPR in New York City, which was a great experience to learn about what was out there in the Public Relations field. I have a major interest in the fashion industry, so working with Vanessa Piche is something I am very excited for. Our team is excited to work together and  build up this brand into something even more AMAZING!

My name is Vanessa Romano and I am a senior at the University of Rhode Island interning with Vanessa Piche for the spring semester of 2019. I am majoring in public relations and minoring in business but have a passion for marketing and advertising. Prior to Vanessa Piche, I also worked with the Hula Fish Ad Agency and The Break Hotel assisting in social media and promoting the business within the community. I am extremely excited to get more experience especially in the fashion industry and could not be more excited to have a spot on this team for these next few months!

Hi everyone! My name is Siarra Chabot and I’m a sophomore double major in Communications and Public Relations with a double minor in Leadership and Business at the University of Rhode Island. I’m originally from Lincoln, Maine, but recently just moved to Mansfield, Massachusetts. This is my first PR internship and I thought Vanessa Piche was a great company to start with. I’m passionate about the advertising and social media part of PR and I’m interested in the fashion industry, so I thought this was a great fit for me. I’m very excited to work with the Vanessa Piche team to build this company and gain more experience in the field!

Hi, I'm Allie Probst and I am from Long Island, New York. I am a freshman at URI studying Public Relations. I am so excited to be interning with Vanessa Piche because her designs  remind me of home. Growing up as a kid I spent my summers on the North Fork of Long Island in a small beach house right on the Long Island Sound watching sailboats and sunsets. When it comes to my professional life I am pretty organized and determined to learn from the best. I have had two great internships with Price Communications and Spark PR and I am looking forward to working with Vanessa Piche and her great team!
